Chapter 18

Georgie

‘By The Ocean’ by Besomorph, RIELL

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

Moonlight cascades over my forearms, bathing my first night back in the false promise of tranquil new beginnings. Unlike the real Calacatta balustrade I lean against, I know this sense of serenity is an illusion. My hope for peace was destroyed by the chaos of my return under the ever-deadly South Carolinian sun.

Life is never simple, but mine is a tangled disaster with no way out other than death. If not by my hand, then by another’s.

Today I saw how time changed us both, and if I’ve learned anything in our brief interaction, it’s that hatred is not sated by time. No, it’s a festering wound hidden in a cavern beneath the skin, waiting to wreak havoc, and neither my heart nor my sanity is safe.

Darkness fills my vision as I close away the world and let the familiarity of home and the fresh sea air consume me, cleansing my thoughts of him. He broke me. And after everything I’ve given up, I’m not back to play into his childish divertissement. He wants a war. I’ll give it to him. On my terms.

The gentle wind catches a musky stench as smoke swirls around, cocooning me in a rancid sense of euphoria. I close my eyes and breathe in the delightful vapor, offering me a sliver of reprieve from this ninth circle of hell called my life. The judgment boring into my back snuffs out the calm washing over me as I shake off the frustration clawing at my skin.

I know Ave is waiting for me to acknowledge her, but I’ve spent the entire night avoiding all conversations regarding Hayes. She can glare as much as she likes, but it’s none of her business that being near Hayes bears the crushing weight of a tempestuous ocean, and no matter the path taken, my survival is slim. Anything I could offer her would only stand to alarm her more than I already have, and no one deserves the burden laid upon me, laid on them.

No, I will continue to do as I always have, and remain silent in my gilded cage while hoping one day the latch breaks setting me free.

Her heated stare intensifies, willing me to glance back. The green-haired pixie sits in her white silk robe with her feet propped up on the wrought iron coffee table, narrowed gaze on me. Her blunt cherry glow deepens between her lips as she draws a deep hit, then releases her high and smokey curiosity into the night air. “What are you doing here, G?”

“I don’t know, Ave; what are any of us doing here besides surviving?”

“Are you fucking serious right now?”

Her annoyed huff brings a smile to my face, the first since I returned today, and it’s nice to have something make me smile. If she thinks this is annoying, she should switch places with me and see how vexed she becomes when I won’t let up on her and her ex.

So, no.
